Difference between Face Serum and Face Oils

Updated: Jan 14

Both serums and oils are to nourish the skin and achieve certain skincare goals. However, their formulations and the way to apply them are distinct from one another.

Face Oil

Face Oils provide nutrition and hydration to the skin. It contains plant extracts and essential oils which provide the skin with lipids. These lipids help to moisture and keep the skin balanced. They help to protect skin from environmental damage which can lead to acne and premature ageing. Oils help to increase moisture which is a fundamental part of keeping the skin healthy.

Face oils are very rich in vitamins and fatty acids seep deep into the skin to lock the moisture, packing a serious punch of essential oils. Facial oils are plant-based essential oils that are extracted from ingredients such as Rosehip, hemp and kiwi seed which are best for hydration, nourishment and deep healing.

Face Serums

Serums are a vital part in skincare routine because they help to repair or protect the skin from ageing, hyperpigmentation, acne and boosting skin’s radiance. So if you have a particular skin issue that needs addressing, it’s worth exploring serums.

Serums come in different consistencies from thin and watery ones to thicker, gel-like ones. These differences in viscosity and formula make certain serums more appropriate for a particular skin type or concern.

Use Facial oils in summer and Serums in winter.

One can use both the serum and facial oil in the routine but ultimately, it’s all about choosing one that will work for your skin type and skin goals. Just keep in mind that you should layer them from lightest to thickest consistency to ensure your products have a chance to absorb and work effectively.

How to apply facial oil

After using the face wash, take a few drops of toner to a cotton swab and apply gently. After 1 minute, while toner is still slightly damp on the skin, gently massage facial oil onto the face.

How to apply face serum

Press a warm moist towel on face gently to open pores slightly. Apply tiny dots of serum all over your face and then blend it. Use light circular massage to apply the face serum. Do not stretch, pull or rub the skin.
